Pepper picked him up, and as she fitted her arms in the carry-pack, she said, “Your mummy isn’t here, sweetheart. She was hurt, and now I have to look after you?”

“Was it the monsters?”

“Yes. It was the monsters.”

“I have to pee.”

Pepper stopped and let him down, then pulled him out of the carry-pack and stood waiting for him but he just looked up at her, and said again, “I have to pee.”

Slipping off the pack, she knelt and helped pull his pants down. As soon as they reached his knees, he started to pee making her move sharply back which made him stop peeing. Realising she needed to be more careful, Pepper knelt down again and waited as he finished peeing. She helped pull up his pants, then said, “Are you hungry or thirsty?”

He just nodded, so she offered him her bottle and then held out a muesli bar. He shook his head and said, “Can I have a biscuit?”

“I don’t have any biscuits. I only have a muesli bar or some baby food.”

“I’m a big boy now. I don’t eat baby food.”

“You are a big boy, and I understand why you don’t want baby food. What is your name?”

“TJ.”

“What does TJ stand for?”

TJ just looked at Pepper and didn’t answer. She said, “What is the name of your sister?”

“Phoebe.”

“Thank you. Now let me pick you up because we have to keep moving before the monsters come.”

“The monsters hurt my daddy.”

Pepper wasn’t sure how to respond so she lifted him to put back in the pack, but he wriggled his feet so they wouldn’t go in and said, “This is Phoebe’s. I’m too big.”

Pepper knelt down to look at him and said, “You are too big. I know that, but I need you to get in the pack. If I have to run away from the monsters, then I can keep you safe. Please let me use the pack.”

He didn’t nod or agree, but when she lifted him the second time, he let her slide his feet through the leg holes.

She turned off her headlamp and heard him say, “It’s too dark, I’m scared and my head hurts.”

Pepper said, “Don’t be scared, TJ. The monsters can find us if they see the light, but they can’t find us when it’s dark. I can see, and if you keep looking, soon you will be able to see things too. We need to be quiet because the monsters can hear us if we make too much noise.”

When her eyes had adjusted, Pepper moved to the edge of the quarry looking for the small walking track her map said was used by hikers and which would take her down into the valley. Eventually, she found what she was looking for and started down the track. It was much steeper than the other wider trail she’d taken to reach the quarry, and her legs were burning when she finally reached the pastureland at the bottom of the hill. It then took her almost half-an-hour to make her way around the edge of the cleared paddocks.
